History of Lone Star Bank

Lone Star Bank, S. S. B. was originally chartered on October 2, 1920. At that time, the bank was called "The Farmers and Merchants Bank of Moulton."

There were several other private and public banks established in Moulton as early as 1885. There was a bank called the First National Bank and a private bank operated as "W.L. Tooley and Co. Bankers". This private bank purchased the First National Bank in 1901. W.L. Tooley and Co. Bankers was sold on September 5, 1905 to First State Bank.

On November 9, 1931 the old First State Bank was purchased by Farmers and Merchants Bank. At this time the Farmers and Merchants State Bank moved from its original location to the former First State Bank building. This building located across the street from the current bank building received extensive renovations in 1961. The Farmers and Merchants Bank changed its name to Moulton State Bank on February 26, 1981.

The Raymond G. Schindler family purchased controlling interest in the bank on September 1, 1981 through Southern Bancshares Holding Company. Various other local shareholders or individuals with ties to the original shareholders own the remaining shares. The Bank purchased a branch in Brazoria, Texas on July 3, 1987.

The Bank name was changed to the First State Bank of Moulton on June 27, 1990.  The Bank purchased the "old Boehm store" and started a restoration project for a new bank building. It was completed on July 13, 1991. The building was constructed inside the original rock exterior of the historic mercantile store. It was designed to look like an early 1900 bank with original high decorative ceiling, natural oak-paneled walls, and a hand painted western mural.

The bank continued to be a strong independent community bank and grew to neighboring communities and other counties. On June 2, 1997, the bank opened a new branch building in Shiner, Texas and one in Gonzales, Texas on February 3, 2005. We also opened Loan Production Offices in Austin during 1999 and Angleton in 2006.

In 2004 the bank's name was ultimately changed to Lone Star Bank, S. S. B. to better reflect its regional presence in Texas.  The bank represents the historical significance of the other banks, dating back prior to 1900, which were acquired by or ultimately resulted in what is now the Lone Star Bank, S. S. B.

The Shareholders, Directors, and employees are proud of the bank's heritage and look forward to continuing to provide the warm, Texas Style services that you, our customers, expect and enjoy.
